Configuration Management System (CMS)

A set of tools and databases that are used to manage an IT service provider's configuration data. The CMS also includes information about incidents, problems, known errors, changes, and releases. A CMS may include one or more CMDBs.

Impact

The CMS provides the "single pane of glass" visibility into the health and structure of the IT estate, integrating data from disparate sources.

Weinto take

We favor Federation. A CMS should not try to copy data from the monitoring tool, the cloud console, and the code repository into one central bucket. Instead, it should index and link them. A good CMS helps you find the information where it lives, rather than trying to own it.
